Summary
This position is located on the Hidden Springs Ranger District of the Shawnee National Forest in Vienna IL.
This position is responsible for the development and scheduling of annual work plans and the execution of field operations relating to the unit wilderness and trails program. The position is 20% supervisory.

Responsibilities

* Communicate with forest users regarding regulations and use.
* Participate in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects.
* Train crews in wilderness and trail construction and revegetation techniques.
* Analyze hazard potential of projects and complete related safety and health hazard analysis reports.
* Instruct and evaluate unit employees on chainsaw falling and bucking techniques, chainsaw safety, and saw maintenance and mechanics, to meet agency safety standards.
* Implement trail, wilderness and bridge construction and reconstruction projects.
* Formulate project work plans in accordance with agency policy to accomplish trail maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects.
* Solicit interviews, select, train, motivate and supervise volunteers to support and develop volunteer program.
* Provide input for budget planning by assisting with the overall estimation of materials, personnel, and supplies needed for work accomplishment for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
* Develop and perform trail log, condition, and prescription surveys to recommend improvements.
* Provide supervision and training of personnel in operation of snowmobiles, ATVs, trail maintenance equipment and specialized equipment used to perform work assignments.
* Plan the work to be accomplished by the unit, assign work to employees, and establish production or quality standards for the unit's work.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
For the GS-6:
You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 in the Federal service. Examples are: Served as a forest protection officer or similar type position which includes conducting investigations, collecting evidence and preparing case reports on violations, and issuing violation notices; Maintained visitors use records and prepared visitors use information for data processing; Conducted education programs addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts; Followed trail maintenance schedules for the reconstruction and construction of trails and wilderness/recreation sites.
OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture) from an accredited college or university.
OR a combination of experience and education as described above.
For the GS-7:
You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 in the Federal service. Examples are: Assisted in planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness/trail projects such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, habitat restoration projects, or invasive plant surveys; Conducted trail and recreation area condition surveys and documented work needs in data management systems; Acted as inspector to inspect and report on contracted recreation work to ensure it met contract specifications.
OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture) from an accredited college or university.
OR a combination of experience and education as described above.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
